The department has a special responsibility for work to achieve SDGs 3) Good Health and Well-being, 4) Quality Education, 5) Gender Equalityand 6) Clean Water and Sanitation.

Section for Human Rights
This section is charged with matters related to human rights, children’s rights, inclusion of persons with disabilities, combatting modern slavery, the rights of religious and faith-based minorities, freedom of speech and the media, democracy and democratisation, as well as administration of core support to UNICEF and the cooperation agreement with Save the Children.
Section for Gender Equality
The section is charged with following up the action plan for women’s rights and gender equality in foreign and development policy, including sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and the strategy to combat harmful traditional practices. The section is working to achieve SDG 5 - Gender Equality.
Section for Higher Education and Research
This section is charged with matters related to higher education and research, including the NORHED and NORPART programmes, the rights of students and academics (SAIH), and support for research institutions in developing countries. The section is working to achieve SDG 4 - Quality Education.
Section for Education
This section is charged with matters related to support for basic education and vocational training. The section cooperates with partners multilaterally, in civil society and industry. The section is working to achieve SDG 4 - Quality Education.
Section for Global Health
This section is charged with matters related to health systems, maternal and child health, response to COVID-19 and non-communicable diseases. The section cooperates with partners multilaterally, in civil society and industry. The section is working to achieve SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being.
